This is right outside of our hotel, the Royal Lahaina Resort, which was a few miles up the road from Lahaina. Despite being a bit of a "factory" for tourists, the hotel was comfortable, clean, and fairly quiet, and it's hard to complain about the beach access. Adam and I brought beers down to the beach our second night and just watched the ocean--we had the entire beach to ourselves.

On the road to Hana

Originally uploaded by aliciamalia. Hana, Hana, Hana--every guidebook you read insists that it's an absolute must when you're in Hawaii. My question--how did Hana get such a reputation? Yes, the drive is lovely, but it's so much prettier once you leave Hana! We stopped at a dozen different places before the town, and all paled in comparison to the hike we took in Haleakala National Park, a few miles past the town. Lindberg's grave is more exciting! So drive the road quickly, and linger at the better spots further on.

The colors are pretty accurate--you can see that it's just sort of green. The water was a bit too rough to swim in, and it's a long, hot hike to get there.
